Biodiversity Genomics Europe Aims to Reverse Biodiversity Loss

UC Davis is a collaborating partner in a new European effort to use DNA data to characterize and conserve life on Earth. The Biodiversity Genomics Europe consortium, launched Sept. 26, is affiliated with the Earth BioGenome Project, which has its administrative headquarters at UC Davis. Harris Lewin, distinguished professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis, chairs the EBP Working Group.

Frightfully Fun 2022 Halloween Symposium

It was great to be back in person for the 2022 Halloween Symposium hosted by the DEI Task Force. The day kicked off with three selected speakers, followed by an excellent keynote from Luis Carvajal-Carmona, and ended with an in-depth discussion of the Genome Center's climate. The DEI Task Force will use the feedback from the discussion to host future events.

The UC Davis Genome Center DEI Committee will be hosting the 2022 Genome Center Halloween Symposium on Oct 31, 2022, from 9 am to 2 pm. The keynote speaker, Dr. Luis Carvajal-Carmona, will present "The need to diversify DNA databases and precision medicine tools: implications for advancing health equity."

 

David Coil: New Public Health Coordinator For Student Health Center Public Health Unit

The new Public Health Unit at the Student Health Center on campus was recently formed out of the activities related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Public Health Unit will focus on patient care, prevention, and campus responses to public health concerns. David Coil, previously a project scientist at the Genome Center,  will be the new public health coordinator. Congratulations, David!

Congratulations to Nicole Halmai on a Presentation Award from the 16th Spotlight on Early Cancer Investigators

Nicole Halmai, a postdoctoral scholar in Luis Carvajal Carmona's lab, recently received a presentation award from this year's UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center's 2022 Spotlight on Early Cancer Investigators - A Cancer Research Mini-Symposium. Halmai's talk was titled "Establishing and Characterizing Patient-derived Models from Racial/Ethnic Minority Gastric Cancer Patients to Advance Cancer Precision Health Equity."

Biodiversity Genomics 2022 Conference: October 3-7

Register now for the free conference Biodiversity Genomics 2022: Sequencing Genomes All Around The World, which will be held online from October 3-7. The deadline for submitting abstracts is July 31, 2022.

The Biodiversity Genomics conference is hosted by the Earth BioGenome Project, which aims to sequence all of the eukaryotic organisms on Earth in 10 years.
