Two University of California, Davis, researchers have won prestigious national and international awards in recognition of their work using genomics to address livestock health and crop resilience in the wake of a changing climate.

A paper titled, "Dr.Nod: computational framework for discovery of regulatory non-coding drivers in tissue-matched distal regulatory elements" by Tomkova et al. 2023 was recently published in Nucleic Acid Research.

A multi-state team led by Patrick J. Brown has been awarded nearly $3.8 million over the next four years for a project to improve pistachio production as the industry faces warmer winters and scarcer water.

Published in Nature Methods in December 2022, the paper titled “SVDSS: structural variation discovery in hard-to-call genomic regions using sample-specific strings from accurate long reads” by Denti, Khorsand, Bonizzoni, Hormozdiari, and Chikhi describes a newly developed method to discover structural variants. Structural variants are defined as medium to large size genetic variations and are shown to be important in human genomics, evolution, and diseases.

UC Davis is a collaborating partner in a new European effort to use DNA data to characterize and conserve life on Earth. The Biodiversity Genomics Europe consortium, launched Sept. 26, is affiliated with the Earth BioGenome Project, which has its administrative headquarters at UC Davis. Harris Lewin, distinguished professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis, chairs the EBP Working Group.

The David Weaver Endowed Lecture is a yearly event hosted by the Genome Center and supported by David Weaver's Family. The series honors the memory of David L. Weaver, a distinguished biophysicist and professor at Tufts University for whom the endowment was established in 2006. The 2022 speaker at the David Weaver Endowed Lecture was Dr.

It was great to be back in person for the 2022 Halloween Symposium hosted by the DEI Task Force. The day kicked off with three selected speakers, followed by an excellent keynote from Luis Carvajal-Carmona, and ended with an in-depth discussion of the Genome Center's climate. The DEI Task Force will use the feedback from the discussion to host future events.

The 2022 David L. Weaver Endowed Lecture in Biophysics and Computational Biology will feature Professor Jack W. Szostak. Szostak's talk is titled "The Origin of Cellular Life."
