Recent Publication: Counter the Weaponization of Genetics Research by Extremists
This post summarizes the publication "Counter the weaponization of genetics research by extremists" by Carlson et al. (2022) in Nature.
In response to the manipulation of genetics data to incorrectly support racism, the authors propose strategies for geneticists to limit the co-opting of human genetics research by extremists. Specifically, human genetics research must increase the representation of populations of the African continent because Africa harbors the greatest human genetic diversity. Under-sampling African populations can downplay the genetic diversity in Africa. In addition, the visuals commonly used in human genetics publications should be reconsidered because they can be easily misconstrued.
