Pamela Ronald was invited to speak at this year's
TED conference, where she spoke about the use of genetic engineering in plants to help improve food security and combat disease.
For over three decades, TEDÂ conferences have brought together some of the most thoughtful and illuminating minds from the fields of technology, entertainment, and design. This year's TED conference was no exception, and Pamela Ronald featured alongside over 90 other speakers, including
Bill Gates and the Dalai Lama.
Professor Ronald's presentation addressed some of the common discussion points regarding the use of genetic engineering:
When it comes to taking genes from viruses and bacteria and putting them into plants, people say âYuck! Why would scientists do that?â Because sometimes it is the safest, cheapest and most effective technology to advance sustainable agriculture and enhance food security.
